We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Kitchen Apprentice to join our dynamic team. This is an entry-level position perfect for someone passionate about food and eager to learn the art of professional cooking. The Kitchen Apprentice will work closely with our experienced chefs, gaining hands-on experience in all aspects of kitchen operations, from food preparation to maintaining a clean and safe work environment. This role is a stepping stone to becoming a skilled chef.
Key Responsibilities:
Food Preparation:
Assist in the preparation of ingredients, including washing, chopping, and portioning.
Learn and execute basic cooking techniques under the guidance of senior chefs.
Help with the preparation of sauces, marinades, and simple dishes.
Kitchen Operations:
Support the kitchen team during service, ensuring smooth and efficient food flow.
Assist with plating and garnishing dishes.
Learn to operate and maintain a variety of kitchen equipment safely.
Cleaning and Hygiene:
Maintain a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene in all work areas.
Wash and sanitize dishes, utensils, and cooking equipment.
Clean and organize fridges, freezers, and storage areas.
Ensure proper disposal of waste and recycling.
Stock Management:
Assist with receiving and storing deliveries.
Help with inventory counts and stock rotation to minimize waste.
Teamwork and Learning:
Follow instructions from the Head Chef and senior kitchen staff.
Actively seek to learn and develop new skills.
Communicate effectively with all members of the team.
Adhere to all health, safety, and food hygiene regulations.
What your apprenticeship includes
● A mixture of face to face and skype/phone catch ups every 4 - 6 weeks.
● A mixture of on and off the job training, including workshops and webinars.
● Reviews every 12 weeks with the Apprentice, Line Manager and Lifetime Trainer.
● Feedback sessions to discuss progress.
● Obtain Functional Skills in English and Maths (if you don’t already have GCSE)
● 30 hours paid work every week.
At Mitchells and Butlers, you will be working towards a Production Chef Level 2 Apprenticeship standard over the course of 15 months.
Desired Skills
No previous kitchen experience is required, but a passion for food and cooking is essential. Ability to work in a fast-paced and high-pressure environment. Strong work ethic and a positive, can-do attitude. Willingness to learn and take on new challenges. Excellent communication and teamwork skills. Punctual, reliable, and able to work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings. Knowledge of basic food hygiene and safety is a plus (or a willingness to obtain certification).
