What are higher apprenticeships?

Higher apprenticeships allow learners to train for job roles that demand highly specialised skill sets. They allow learners to gain these advanced vocational skills, experience and an industry recognised qualification through workplace training and blended learning.

Offered across a range of industries, higher apprenticeships refer to any apprenticeship between levels 4-7 with levels 6 and 7 being commonly known as “degree apprenticeships''. In terms of comparison, Level 6 is considered equal to a bachelor's degree, with level 7 being equal to a masters degree.

How do higher apprenticeships work?

Like most apprenticeship programs, the learner will develop competencies and skills while working in their specific field and studying alongside their job role. Delivery of the apprenticeship will be dependent on the apprenticeship provider and the needs of the employer. Apprenticeship standards define the exact skills and competencies the learner should display upon assessment and these are defined by groups of employers in industry collectives known as “trailblazer groups”. A higher apprenticeship can last up to five years but this depends on a number of factors such as the industry, and whether the learner is undertaking the apprenticeship on a full or part-time basis.

How can higher apprenticeships benefit your organisation?

Trains your future leaders
You will be training people with a high aptitude which means they have the skills to rise into senior and leadership roles. This means that you can future proof the core of your organisation for the challenges of tomorrow
Fill niche skill areas
Higher level apprenticeships allow you to train talent into niche skill areas that are otherwise difficult to fill through traditional recruitment. Working collaboratively, we will design and deliver programmes based on your requirements so that unique workplace needs are met
Fresh skills
The quality of skills higher apprenticeships can breed into your organisation are lasting, up to date and relevant. Having a workforce that understands the latest practises, techniques and developments within their roles immediately gives you a competitive edge and ensures that you can function efficiently
A loyal workforce
Higher apprenticeships tend to last longer in duration due to the requirements of the programme. This long-term commitment produces learners who know and contribute to your organisation and are more likely to stay, allowing you to retain your prized skill sets.

Can learners do higher apprenticeships with a degree?

Learners with existing degrees can apply for higher apprenticeship programmes but their chosen apprenticeship vocation must offer a set of skills that are substantively different. This is so that the learner is not funded twice for the same kind of training. An experienced apprenticeship recruitment service will be able to advertise higher apprenticeship roles and provide a quality shortlist of eligible candidates who meet your criteria.
